Connect Kontala to HMRC
Last updated 20 July 2026.
To file VAT returns online, you authorise Kontala with HMRC once. The authorisation happens on HMRC's own website, and only owners and admins can manage it.
What you will need
- Your Government Gateway sign-in details - the ones you use for HMRC online services.
- A business signed up for Making Tax Digital for VAT.
- Your VAT registration details already saved in Kontala.
Connect to HMRC
- Open the account menu and choose Integrations.
- On the HMRC Making Tax Digital card, select Connect to HMRC.
- Sign in on HMRC's website and approve the authorisation. Kontala asks to view your VAT information and submit your VAT returns.
HMRC sends you back to Kontala, and the card shows a green Connected badge with the connection date. Kontala never sees your Government Gateway password - you only ever enter it on HMRC's site.
Right after connecting, Kontala compares your VAT periods with HMRC's records. If they do not match, it offers to adjust your settings - see VAT periods and due dates.
Connection states
- Not connected - the organisation is not yet authorised. Select Connect to HMRC to start.
- Connected - you can submit returns and use the VAT Dashboard. Select Disconnect to remove the authorisation at any time.
HMRC authorisations do not last forever. If yours expires, submissions start failing - just reconnect from the same card.
Next step
When a period has ended, you are ready to submit a VAT return.
