Accounting dates and settings

Open the account menu - the button showing your company name, top right - and choose Settings. Everyone can view the page; editing needs permission level Tax, Accounting & Users or higher - see User permission levels.
Accounting Dates
- Company Start Date (required) - the date you officially started the business or company.
- Company Trading Start Date - the date you commenced trading, if it is different from your company start date.
- First Accounting Year End Date (required) - unless you know otherwise, one year after the end of the month you started the company.
Kontala Start Date
The Start Date (required) is the date Kontala calculates your accounts from: transactions dated on or after it are included. Normally this is the start of an accounting year, to keep things simple, and it cannot be earlier than your company start date.
If you are switching from other software, this is your switchover date - see Moving to Kontala.
When dates lock
Once you have run payroll or saved a VAT return, the Company Start Date and the Kontala Start Date are locked and can no longer be changed. Check them before your first pay run or VAT return.
Expenses
Tick Allow expenses to be approved directly from draft (skip the submit step) to let a draft expense be approved in one step: an owner or admin can approve anyone's, and a team member can approve their own. Leave it off to keep the standard two-step submit then approve workflow - see Submit and approve expenses.
Choose Save Changes when you are done.
Your Profit & Loss settings, Corporation Tax rate (%) and Accounting year start, live on the Company details page.
