Partial explanations

Split one bank transaction across several explanations when a single payment covers more than one thing.

Last updated 20 July 2026.

One bank line does not always mean one thing. A single card payment might cover stationery and software, or a lump sum received might settle two invoices. Kontala lets you split the line across as many explanations as you need.

Split a transaction

  1. Click the transaction to open its explanation panel. The Value field is pre-filled with the full amount.
  2. Lower the Value to the first portion, choose its Type and Category (or linked record), then choose Add.
  3. The panel now lists that explanation and shows how much is left - for example "£45.00 left to explain" - with the Value pre-filled to the remainder.
  4. Repeat until the panel reads "Fully explained".

Each portion is independent: it has its own type, category, VAT treatment and description, and where a type allows it, its own supporting document.

Status while you split

A line keeps its red Unexplained marker until the whole amount is explained. Only when nothing is left to explain does it turn to the green Explained tick, so the Unexplained tab never lets a half-done line slip through.

Adjusting a portion

Click any explanation in the panel's list to reopen it, change it, and choose Save changes, or choose Remove to delete just that portion - the amount returns to the line's unexplained remainder.

For the basics of types and categories, see Explain a transaction. For undoing explanations more generally, see Correct an explained transaction.
