Record a transfer between accounts

Explain money moved between your own bank accounts as a transfer so it is never counted as income or spending.

Last updated 20 July 2026.

Moving money between your own accounts is not income and not spending, so it must not be explained as either. Kontala has a pair of explanation types just for this.

Explain the transfer

  1. Go to Banking, open the account, and click the transaction.
  2. For money leaving the account, choose the Type Transfer to Another Account. For money arriving, choose Transfer from Another Account.
  3. Under Account, pick the other bank account.
  4. Choose Add.

There is no category and no VAT - a transfer is just money changing pockets.

Matching the other side

A transfer touches two accounts, and both sides need to agree.

If the other account already has the matching line (for example, both statements are imported), Kontala looks for it and shows a Matching transaction dropdown with the best match pre-selected - link it and both lines are explained together as the two halves of one transfer.

If there is no match yet, keep the "Create a new line" option and Kontala adds the matching transaction to the other account for you. Nothing is double-counted either way.

Transfers between currencies

If the two accounts hold different currencies, extra fields appear. Leave Automatic currency conversion ticked and Kontala calculates the amount received using daily exchange rates.

If you know the exact amount that arrived, untick it and type the real figure into Conversion Value - your bank's rate rarely matches the market rate to the penny. See Foreign currency and FX for how the difference is handled.

For the explanation basics, see Explain a transaction.
