After you file

What happens once your VAT return is filed, and how to pay HMRC what you owe.

Last updated 20 July 2026.

Filing tells HMRC what you owe. Here is what changes in Kontala, and what is left for you to do.

The period locks

Once a return is Filed (or Marked as filed), every transaction dated inside the period locks. Invoices, bills, expenses, and bank explanations in that period can no longer be edited or deleted, and new records cannot be dated into it. This keeps your books matching the legal filing exactly.

Where your filed returns live

Your returns stay under VAT in the top navigation, with their status shown against each period. Open a filed period any time to see the exact boxes that were filed - the figures are a frozen snapshot, not a recalculation. Your HMRC receipt number (the form bundle number) is shown when you submit; keep it for your records.

Paying HMRC

Kontala does not take payment - you pay HMRC directly. The Payments to HMRC card on the return shows the Payment Due (or Refund Due) amount and date, and HMRC's payment options are at Pay your VAT bill.

Once HMRC processes your payment, it appears under Payments to HMRC on the VAT Dashboard, and the amount outstanding under What you owe goes down.

Filed somewhere else?

If a return was submitted outside Kontala, record it with Mark a return as filed so the period still locks.
