Add a bank account
Last updated 20 July 2026.
Every transaction in Kontala belongs to a bank account, so this is the first thing to set up. Adding and editing accounts needs a permission level that includes managing your organisation - see User permission levels.
Add the account
- Go to Banking in the top navigation, then choose Add New Account.
- Enter an Account name and pick the Currency and Status.
- Tick This is a personal account if it is not a business account, and Make this my primary account for your main account. The primary account is marked with a star on the Bank Accounts list.
- Optionally add the Bank name, Account Number, Sort/Bank Code (the UK 6-digit sort code), IBAN and BIC / SWIFT. Leave Show these details on Invoices ticked if you want customers to see these payment details on your invoices.
- Choose Create new account.
To change any of this later, open the account and choose Edit details.
Opening balance
The Balance field is the account's balance at the start of your accounting start date. For an account opened after that date, enter zero.
Once the account has any transactions the opening balance is locked, so set it before you import anything. Your accounting start date lives in your settings - see Accounting dates and settings.
Account currency
The Currency list is limited to currencies Kontala can convert automatically using daily exchange rates. For how foreign-currency accounts behave in your reports, see Foreign currency and FX.
Remove an account
Open the account, choose More, then Delete account. The account is hidden from your list, and an account that already has transactions cannot be deleted.
