Import a bank statement
Last updated 20 July 2026.
Statement imports are how bank transactions get into Kontala. Export a file from your online banking, upload it, and confirm how it should be read.
Upload the file
- Go to Banking, open the account, then choose Upload statement. The Import statement page opens.
- Export your statement from your bank as a CSV or OFX file (up to 5 MB). If you are building the file yourself, use Download CSV template as a starting point.
- Choose Choose a file and pick your export.
Kontala reads the file and auto-detects its layout.
Check the columns
For a CSV, the Check the columns step shows the first lines of your file and the mapping Kontala detected. Check each dropdown points at the right column:
- How is the amount shown? - One amount column (a leading minus means money out) or Separate money-in / money-out columns.
- Date column and Date format.
- Description column, plus the optional Balance column and Bank memo column.
The Preview table re-reads your file as you adjust, so you can see exactly how each row will land. Any row Kontala cannot read is flagged in the preview with the reason.
An OFX file describes its own columns, so there is nothing to map - just check the preview.
Import
Choose Import. The Import complete summary shows how many rows were imported and how many were skipped as duplicates, so re-importing an overlapping export is always safe.
Choose View statement to see the new lines. Imported transactions start as Unexplained - the next step is to explain them.
If the file will not read cleanly, see Statement import formats and Statement import problems.
