Kontala is online accounting software for UK small businesses. It brings your invoicing, spending, payroll, banking, VAT and year end tax together in one place, with an AI assistant called Tala to help you make sense of it all.

What you can do in Kontala

  • Ask Tala. Tala is your AI accountant. Ask questions about your books in plain English and get answers based on your real figures.
  • Send estimates and invoices. Create and send estimates and invoices, and record payments as they come in.
  • Record what you spend. Capture expense claims and bills, including receipts you upload or email in.
  • Run payroll. Prepare pay runs, produce payslips, and send RTI submissions to HMRC. See Payroll.
  • Do your banking. Add your bank accounts, import statements, and explain each transaction so your books stay accurate. See Banking.
  • File VAT under Making Tax Digital. Kontala calculates each VAT return from your books and submits it directly to HMRC. See VAT.
  • Close your year. A limited company gets statutory accounts, filed straight to Companies House, plus its Corporation Tax computations and CT600. See End of Year.
  • Prepare your Self Assessment figures. A sole trader, partnership or landlord gets their trading profit worked out and laid out as SA103 boxes. See Self Assessment.
  • Work under CIS. Record the deductions contractors take from you, and prepare your own monthly CIS300 and subcontractor statements. See CIS.
  • See how the business is doing. Dashboards, Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, and more, in Reports.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC's programme for keeping and submitting VAT records digitally. You can read HMRC's overview of Making Tax Digital for VAT.

Who it is for

Kontala is built for UK sole traders, partnerships, landlords, and small limited companies who want their bookkeeping, payroll, and VAT in one simple tool. Kontala is currently available to UK businesses only.

What you see depends on how your business is set up. A limited company gets End of Year, statutory accounts and Corporation Tax; everyone else gets Income Tax and the Self Assessment figures instead.
