Trial balance
Last updated 20 July 2026.
The Trial Balance lists every account in your books that has activity, with its balance in the Debit or Credit column. It is the report your accountant will usually ask for first. Go to Reports and choose Trial Balance.
Read the report
Each row shows the account's code and name, its Account Type (Income, Expense, Bank, and so on), and its balance. Because bookkeeping is double entry, the two columns always agree - the Trial Balance Check (nearest £) row at the bottom shows the matching totals.
The report is cumulative: it counts everything from your opening balances up to the chosen date. Use the Date dropdown to run it as at Today, any of your accounting year ends, your Opening balances, or a Custom date range.
Drill down to transactions
Click any account to open it in Account transactions, which lists every entry that makes up the balance. That is the quickest way to answer "what is in this number?" - each entry links back to the invoice, bill, or expense that created it.
