Set-up checklist for a new company
The six set-up steps that take a brand-new Kontala company from empty to ready for day-to-day bookkeeping.

A new company works out of the box, but ten minutes of set-up makes everything after it smoother. Work through these steps in order. Most of them live in the account menu, the button showing your company name, top right.
- Check your company details. Open the account menu and choose Company Details. These details appear on your invoices and other documents, so fix anything that is wrong first. See Company details.
- Set your accounting dates. Open the account menu and choose Settings. Your accounting year drives your reports, so get it right before you start entering data. See Accounting dates and settings.
- Enter your VAT registration. If you are VAT registered, open the account menu and choose VAT Registration so your returns are calculated correctly from day one. See Set up your VAT registration.
- Add your team. Open the account menu and choose Users to invite colleagues, each with a permission level that controls what they can see and do. See Add and manage users.
- Add your bank accounts. Go to Banking and choose Add New Account for each business account, entering its opening balance as you go. See Add a bank account.
- Import your first statement. Open the account and choose Upload statement to bring in your recent transactions, then explain them. See Import a bank statement.
