Engagement dashboard

What the Engagement dashboard in Kontala Analytics shows: engagement, pages, key elements and returning visitors, its filters and every tile on it.

Engagement: Do they stick? shows what people do once they arrive: how deep they go, which pages they read and leave from, which calls to action and forms they use, and whether first-time visitors come back.

Use it to find pages and elements that hold attention, and those that lose it.

Good to know

  • A visit is engaged when it has two or more page views, or a conversion. Bounce rate is 100% minus the engagement rate.
  • Scroll depth tiles stay empty on properties that do not capture scroll.
  • CTA clicks are clicks with a click type, so the Key elements tab fills as you type clicks on the Click types page.
  • The Coming back tab keeps its own 90-day range, since a return needs time to happen.

At a glance

How visits engage once people arrive - by channel, landing page, device and new or returning visitor - how deep they go, the pages they read and leave from, the clicks and forms they act on, and whether first-time visitors come back.

  • Tabs: 4, Engagement, Pages, Key elements and Coming back
  • Charts and numbers: 41
  • Built on: the Visits explore, with some tiles on Clicks and Page views, as each says

Filters

The filters across the top apply to every tile they can, unless a tile says it has its own range.

  • Date range: the last 30 days, today included. It does not apply to 7 tiles on the Coming back tab.
  • Channel: not set when the dashboard opens, so it keeps everything until you pick a value.
  • Device type: not set when the dashboard opens, so it keeps everything until you pick a value.
  • Allowed origin: set to true, so tiles count only the origins your property allows. Clear it to see every origin the tag ran on.

How to read this dashboard

Engaged means a visit with two or more page views, or a conversion; bounce rate is 100% minus the engagement rate. Kontala does not measure time on a page yet, so a visitor who reads one page for minutes counts as a bounce, and a one-page visit lasts 0 s.

Channel is how each visit arrived, Returning a visit that was not its device's first, and Device type the hardware the browser names. Scroll depth reads on properties that capture scroll, and says No data on the others.

Bot traffic, visitors who declined consent and origins the property does not allow are left out. A visitor is a first-party cookie, which Safari clears after 7 days.

Pages

TileKindWhat it shows
Page viewsNumberPage views in range. Bot traffic and visitors who declined consent are already left out. From the Page views explore.
Distinct pagesNumberHow many different pages were viewed in range, each hostname and path once. From the Page views explore.
Avg. time on pageNumberFrom a page view to its visit's next one, averaged over the page views that had a next one. From the Page views explore.
Read to the endNumberThe share of page views that measured a scroll depth whose visitor reached 90% of the page or more. From the Page views explore.

How far down do they read?

TileKindWhat it shows

Scroll depth by page typeTableEach page type that measured a scroll depth, with its page views, how far down them visitors got on average, and the share that reached half and the end of the page. Empty where the property does not capture scroll. From the Page views explore.

Where do visits end?

TileKindWhat it shows

Exit rate by page typeBar chartThe share of each page type's page views that were the last of their visit, the type with most page views first. From the Page views explore.

About pages

Time on page runs from a page view to the visit's next one, so a visit's last page has no time and is left out. Scroll depth is the deepest point a visitor saw, the first screen included, on properties that capture scroll, and Read to the end is reaching 90% of the page, as GA4 counts it; both say No data where scroll is not captured. Judge an exit rate by the page's job: a confirmation page should end visits.

About key elements

A CTA click is any click Kontala can name: declared on the page with data-ac-event, typed by a rule confirmed on the Click types page, or by the model; the most-clicked elements without a type are listed above so they can be named there. A Shopify checkout's steps are named by Kontala's Shopify pixel, so they count. A form submission is a click on a form's submit button, or a form sent without one; a store's Add to cart is a form too. Clicks appear on properties that turned them on. Video plays and form starts are not captured yet.

Landing pages that bring first-time visitors backTableThe 50 pages most first visits of the last 90 days began on, with how engaged those first visits were and the share whose device came back within 7 and 30 days.

About coming back

Back within 7 days is the share of first visits whose device made another visit within 7 days, out of the first visits at least 7 days old, so a recent first visit is not counted as gone; 30 days likewise, and each reads Too early until some first visit is that old. A visit ends after 30 idle minutes, so coming back the same day counts. These tiles read the first visits of the last 90 days whatever the date range says, and Channel, Device type and Allowed origin filter the first visit. A device is a first-party cookie, which Safari clears after 7 days, so returns after a week read low on Safari.
