HMRC submission errors

What HMRC's rejection messages usually mean and how to get your return submitted.

Last updated 10 July 2026.

If HMRC does not accept a return, the message almost always points to authorisation or timing rather than your figures.

What the messages usually mean

  • Authorisation expired or missing. Reconnect from Settings → HMRC - see Connect Kontala to HMRC.
  • No open obligation. HMRC only accepts a return once the period is available to file. Wait until the period opens.
  • Return already submitted. The period may have been filed elsewhere before you moved to Kontala.

Get it submitted

Fix the cause above and try again - most rejections clear after reconnecting to HMRC. Full steps are in Fix a rejected submission.

If HMRC keeps refusing a return you believe is due, contact our team with the period and the exact message, and we will help.
