Deadlines and statuses (on track, due soon, overdue)
How Kontala's deadline countdown works and what each status means.
Last updated 10 July 2026.
Kontala tracks your VAT deadline for you and shows a simple status so you always know where you stand.
The statuses
- On track - your return is not due for a while and nothing needs your attention yet.
- Due soon - the deadline is close (within about two weeks), so it is time to review and file.
- Overdue - the deadline has passed. File as soon as you can to limit any penalties.
How the deadline is worked out
For standard quarterly returns, the deadline to submit and pay is usually one calendar month and 7 days after the end of your VAT period. Kontala reads your actual obligation dates from HMRC, so the countdown matches what HMRC expects.
Always confirm against your own HMRC account, and see the current rules on VAT return deadlines.
Verify tax dates before relying on them. Deadlines and penalty rules can change.
Missed a deadline?
Late returns and payments can lead to penalty points and charges under HMRC's system. Read HMRC's guidance on VAT penalties, and file as soon as possible.
